ABOUT US
We Forge Connections and Cultivate Partnerships
The Centre for Humanities and Medicine (CHM) is dedicated to forging connections between the humanities and medical sciences, as well as other disciplines. We believe that effective healthcare integrates medical and scientific expertise with understandings of the social, cultural, and ethical dimensions of care. Our centre builds collaborations between academic scholars, healthcare professionals, the government, students, and community partners, supporting research and education that address a more humanistic and holistic perspective of health and well-being. By encouraging dialogue across disciplines, we aim to enhance the quality of, and promote compassionate and culturally-informed approaches to, healthcare service delivery. We also aim to build a more comprehensive understanding of health and well-being. We are committed to advancing knowledge, building partnerships, and making a positive impact on health, wellbeing, and society.

OUR STRENGTHS
HEALTH COMMUNICATION
Our centre has a longstanding interest in healthcare communication, focusing on topics such as mental health, palliative care, sexuality, and women’s health within Hong Kong and Greater China. Supported by international networks, prestigious funding, and collaborations with NGOs and healthcare institutions, the centre's work aims to advance scholarship and impact in this vital field.
INTERDISCIPLINARY
Another strength of our centre lies in its ability to forge strong collaborations across diverse fields, bringing together expertise from medicine, social sciences, linguistics, education and more. This interdisciplinary approach enhances the development of innovative health communication strategies tailored to various cultural and social contexts. By bridging different disciplines, we aim to produce research that informs policy, improves public understanding, and addresses complex health challenges worldwide.
HKU RIICH
Our centre closely collaborates with HKU RIICH, where our director, Prof. Olga Zayts, is the founding director. HKU RIICH is an international interdisciplinary research hub that conducts evidence-based research and develops educational and community initiatives to improve healthcare communication, practice, and education in Hong Kong and internationally.

OUR MISSION

We are committed to advancing interdisciplinary scholarship on the social, cultural, and ethical dimensions of health. As a dynamic research hub, CHM supports ambitious research agendas, hosts international and local events, and supports visiting scholars to forge collaborations. We aim to promote our research through esteemed international outlets and partnerships, advancing the Medical Humanities in Asia. CHM is at the forefront of addressing contemporary health challenges, including those driven by AI and technological changes, and translating scholarly insights into practical solutions. By strengthening global networks, enhancing HKU’s international reputation, and engaging relevant stakeholders, we strive to influence health policy, inspire future research and health advances, and contribute meaningfully to global public health discourse for a healthier future.
