PEOPLE

Angus Chan is the Research Manager of the Centre for the Humanities and Medicine (CHM) and the Research and Impact Initiative on Communication in Healthcare (RIICH) at the University of Hong Kong (HKU). He completed his BA in English Studies with a minor in Language and Communication at HKU. During his undergraduate studies, he held a one-year visiting studentship in English Language and Literature at the University of Oxford. He received his MPhil in Linguistics and Language Sciences from the University of Cambridge. His research draws on discourse analytic and sociolinguistic approaches to explore pertinent social, health, and environmental issues in genres of mass and professional communication. His most recent work focuses on bureaucratic communication in public bodies, particularly genres related to tenure and promotion reviews in higher education settings. His other areas of interest are in historical sociolinguistics (from the eighteenth century to the present day), lexical sociolinguistics, and World Englishes (especially in East Asian contexts).

Flora pursued an MA in Linguistics at the University of Hong Kong after completing her BA in English at the City University of Hong Kong (CityU). Her research interests centre broadly on pragmatics, specifically cross-cultural communication and discourse analysis. Her master’s dissertation is a comparative study of face and politeness strategies in social media request responses between China and US. Before joining CHM, she held research assistant positions at CityU, exploring culture-language links to mental health perceptions, AI applications in education and sustainability in luxury brands. Her cross-disciplinary experience in linguistics helped her develop insights to bridge theoretical frameworks with diverse contexts and domains.

Edie holds a Master of Arts in Museum Studies from the University of Hong Kong, building upon her foundational training in a Bachelor of Fine Arts. Her research interests bridge art history and cultural, with a focus on how material objects and narratives shape collective identity. Before joining the RIICH project, she developed a professional background as a Marketing Assistant within the art fair industry. This unique blend of creative practice and administrative experience allows her to translate complex academic research into engaging, visual, and project-ready outcomes for interdisciplinary initiatives.

Farrukh is a current student at The University of Hong Kong, majoring in Business Analytics. His academic interests lie between finance, economics, and data analytics, where he focuses on applying quantitative methods to real-world problems. Outside of his research, he balances his academic rigor with a disciplined athletic lifestyle, regularly engaging in team-based and individual sports such as football and tennis. He also has a strong interest in 20th-century history, reflecting a broader curiosity about global events and their long-term economic and societal impacts.
