The Invention of 'Medical Humanities'
Join us for the upcoming Centre for the Humanities and Medicine Public Lecture by Prof. Brian Hurwitz, Emeritus Professor of Medicine and the Arts in the English Department at King's College London.
Prof. Hurwitz will examine the invention of ‘Medical Humanities’, a lexical string that brings two different domains together in terms of intellectual, educational, and Anglo-American contexts. He will also discuss the various functions of the term and what this novel expression signified at the dawn of the twentieth century.

CORPUS LINGUISTICS WORKSHOP

This workshop, arranged jointly by the University of Hong Kong and Lancaster University’s Centre for Corpus Approaches to Social Science, will offer a series of sessions on corpus linguistics and the application of corpus techniques in discourse studies and the study of healthcare communication. The sessions will include both lectures and a hands-on tutorial.

2026 IC4CH SYMPOSIUM
Bridging Traditions, Building Futures: Connecting Health Communication Research Across Asia-Pacific and Other Contexts
We are thrilled to announce that the Research and Impact Initiative on Communication in Healthcare at the University of Hong Kong (HKU RIICH) will host the next conference of the International Consortium for Communication in Healthcare (IC4CH). IC4CH is an international group of academic researchers from the University of Hong Kong, Australian National University, Nanyang Technological University, Lancaster University, University College London, Queensland University of Technology, University of the Witwatersrand, and the Harvard Medical School. The group undertakes collaborative, cutting-edge, and interdisciplinary research on health communication.
We seek to bring together health communication research from around the world, as well as particularly highlighting those studies being conducted in the Asia-Pacific region. Another aim of the conference is to examine health communication in different technological contexts, whether that be in regard to artificial intelligence, video-mediated consultations, or the introduction of novel technologies into healthcare practice.
The annual conference will be held at the University of Hong Kong from 3 to 4 December 2026. Please mark your diaries now to avoid missing out!

From a Paper to a Published Paper: An Ongoing Journey
What turns a piece of academic work into a paper that can travel successfully through the publication process, and what does it take to move from novice to expert author and researcher? This two-part workshop explores these questions through an overview of the development of a research agenda and an academic voice, followed by practical examples of how researchers can transform academic work into a manuscript suitable for submission to a leading international journal.
